Dr. Destenie Nock an Associate Professor at Carnegie Mellon University, with a joint appointment in Civil & Environmental Engineering and Engineering & Public Policy. Her work focuses on identifying households who keep their homes at unsafe and unhealthy temperatures. She is best known for showing that low- and moderate-income groups forgo cooling their homes to save money on their energy bills, thus putting themselves at risk of heat stroke and heat illness during heat waves. Dr. Nock founded Peoples Energy Analytics, a data-driven startup that uses their energy intelligence platform to help utilities and identify heat stroke risk due to lack of air conditioning use. She holds a PhD in Industrial Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and BS degrees in Electrical Engineering and Applied Math from North Carolina A&T State University. Her book on energy affordability is forthcoming in 2028.
